Title

Re-Skecting the 'Mfecane'; The Impact of Violence on Rolong Life, 1823-36

Description

[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: A paper by Margaret Kinsman submitted for the Mfecane Aftermath conference held at University of the Witwatersrand in September in 1991. The paper argued that Julian Cobbing's 'alibi' argument cannot explain the widespread social breakdown that took place in southern Africa during the 1820s. This is because, although Cobbing identifies raiding as a major factor, he overlooks the impact raiding had on communities. Kinsman examined the Rolong group as a case study.]

Custodial History

[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: Written by Margaret Kinsman ahead of the Mfecane Aftermath conference in September 1991. Copies were printed and distributed for the conference's attendees, including Jan-Bart Gewald. The paper remained in Gewald's possession after the conference. C. 2014, he donated it along with all of the other Mfecane Aftermath conference papers to Leiden University Library. In 2021, Gewald's deposit of Mfecane Aftermath conference papers was uncovered by Ettore Morelli of FHYA. Following a request by FHYA, the papers were digitised by Leiden University Libraries for use in the FHYA's Spotlight on the Mfecane presentation. Uploaded by Benathi Marufu for FHYA in September 2021.]
