Title
Untapped Sources: Slave Exports from Southern and Central Namibia up to the Mid-Nineteenth Century
Description
[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: A paper by Jan-Bart Gewald submitted for the Mfecane Aftermath conference held at University of the Witwatersrand in September in 1991. The paper argued that new sources suggested that, contrary to previous belief, slaving did occur in southern and central Namibia up until the mid-nineenth century. Gewald concluded, however, that slaving was a by-product of cattle raiding.]

[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: Written by Jan-Bart Gewald ahead of the Mfecane Aftermath conference in September 1991. Copies were printed and distributed for the conference's attendees, including Jan-Bart Gewald. The paper remained in Gewald's possession after the conference. C. 2014, he donated it along with all of the other Mfecane Aftermath conference papers to Leiden University Library. In 2021, Gewald's deposit of Mfecane Aftermath conference papers was uncovered by Ettore Morelli of FHYA. Following a request by FHYA, the papers were digitised by Leiden University Libraries for use in the FHYA's Spotlight on the Mfecane presentation. Uploaded by Benathi Marufu for FHYA in September 2021.]
